Public interest remains high following a recent demonstration against nationwide insecurity led by social media activist Martin Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM).

The demonstration drew hundreds of participants, including civil society organizations and concerned citizens, who marched through designated routes in the federal capital. Bearing placards demanding immediate government intervention and the protection of lives, the demonstrators urged authorities to intensify the fight against banditry, terrorism, kidnapping, and other violent crimes impacting various communities.

During the procession, the crowd encountered armed security personnel, where Otse sharply criticized the current security approach. He questioned the allocation of tactical resources, suggesting that heavy military hardware and ammunition should be directed entirely toward combating kidnappers and insurgents rather than monitoring peaceful citizens. He also highlighted the severe toll of ongoing violence on ordinary Nigerians, referencing systemic instances of assault, murder, and displacement.

Addressing the gathering, Otse emphasized that the demonstration was entirely non-political and focused solely on the safety of ordinary citizens. He urged both federal and state administrations to enhance intelligence gathering, strengthen law enforcement, and prioritize public safety so Nigerians can live without fear. Participants also called for increased support and improved welfare for security personnel, alongside stronger partnerships between government agencies and local communities to combat crime effectively.

The procession was monitored by security agencies to maintain public order, resulting in temporary traffic diversions but concluding without any major incidents. The demonstration follows a recent tightening of security measures around the Presidential Villa in Abuja after various human rights groups announced plans to protest.

In response to ongoing criticisms regarding national security, President Bola Tinubu previously stated that the persistent security challenges are being leveraged by political opponents aiming to destabilize his administration. Speaking to a delegation from Plateau State, the President maintained a firm stance against critics, characterizing the situation as a political tool used by adversaries while reaffirming his commitment to his mandate and future campaign plans.

Echoing this sentiment at a recent rally in Edo State, Governor Monday Okpebholo alleged that insecurity is being weaponized to distract the administration, asserting that political leadership remains secure despite these pressures.

Despite these political exchanges, civil society groups and demonstrators continue to pressure the government for immediate, decisive action to resolve the escalating security challenges affecting multiple regions across the country.
