The Katsina State Government has confirmed the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who passed away while being held captive by bandits. In an official statement released on Saturday, the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasir Muazu, described the incident as a profound loss for both the state and the entire nation.

According to the official announcement, the retired military officer died from medical complications related to diabetes and hypertension. The government noted that while both state authorities and security agencies made continuous, concerted efforts to secure his safe release, those attempts ultimately proved unsuccessful.

Governor Dikko Umaru Radda characterized the tragedy as a deeply dark moment, emphasizing that it highlights the critical need for a more robust and coordinated approach to tackling regional insecurity. The Governor extended his heartfelt condolences to the grieving family and reaffirmed his administration's unwavering commitment to collaborating with the Federal Government and security forces to eliminate banditry and ensure residents' safety.

The late Major General and his wife were abducted on May 30 during a journey through Katsina State. Recent reports indicated that the kidnappers had previously demanded the release of three detained fighters and the return of seized livestock in exchange for the couple's freedom.
