At least 33 suspected illegal miners arrested by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Niger State have died while in detention following a suspected disease outbreak.

The incident was confirmed in an official statement released on Thursday, September 17, 2026, by the NSCDC Niger State Commandant, Suberu Siyaka Aniviye. According to the command, the victims were among a large group of individuals detained during a security operation conducted on September 15 and 16 at M.I. Wushishi/Lukoto village.

The crackdown was part of ongoing state efforts to curb illegal mining operations, which also led to the recovery of various exhibits. However, authorities reported that in the early hours of September 17, scores of the detained suspects suddenly fell ill and passed away.

The remains of the deceased have since been transferred to the General Hospital in Minna to undergo comprehensive medical examinations to officially determine the exact cause of death.

In the wake of the incident, the NSCDC announced it is actively collaborating with other security agencies to manage the crisis. The command has also appealed to the public and the families of the deceased to remain calm, avoid panic, and refrain from any actions that could disrupt public peace and order. Furthermore, the agency reaffirmed its dedication to upholding human rights standards while executing its mandate to protect lives, property, and critical national infrastructure.
