Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has raised alarms regarding widespread food safety issues in Nigeria following a laboratory test on freshly squeezed orange juice consumed by his wife, Dolapo. Speaking at the Gardeners’ Seminar Open Day in Lagos on August 28, with a video released on his YouTube channel, Osinbajo shared that his wife experienced unexplained headaches despite maintaining a healthy diet and avoiding carbonated beverages. Subsequent laboratory analysis revealed that the fresh orange juice was entirely unfit for human consumption.

This personal account highlights a broader national crisis involving farmers and traders utilizing hazardous chemicals to accelerate fruit ripening and preservation. Commonly abused substances include calcium carbide, gamma-lin-20, highly toxic fumigants like phosphite, and the insecticide known locally as Sniper. Research cited during the seminar indicates that a significant percentage of fruit and vegetable retailers deliberately apply these dangerous substances to tomatoes, bananas, mangoes, and other produce.

The findings emphasize that visual appeal is no longer a reliable guarantee of safety, as naturally sourced foods and fresh juices can be severely compromised during the journey from farm to table. In response to these alarming revelations, Osinbajo urged regulatory authorities to enforce stricter oversight and called for comprehensive public education campaigns to inform agricultural workers about safer practices. Consumers have similarly been advised to remain vigilant, question vendors regarding their handling processes, and report suspicious agricultural practices amid a rising wave of public concern over counterfeit and substandard consumer goods in local markets.
