Peter Obi has raised fresh concerns over alleged large-scale revenue leakages in Nigeria, warning that the country is “bleeding from within” despite increased earnings.

In a statement posted on X on Saturday, the former presidential candidate said recent World Bank reports indicate that Nigeria generated approximately ₦84 trillion in federation revenue over the past three years. He, however, alleged that about 41 percent of the amount—roughly ₦34.44 trillion—was not remitted to the Federation Account.

Obi noted that the unaccounted sum exceeds the combined ₦34 trillion allocated for capital expenditure in the 2024 and 2025 Appropriation Bills, describing the comparison as indicative of the scale of the issue.

According to him, the situation points to deep-rooted challenges in public finance management, which he said continue to deprive key sectors such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure of critical funding.

He called for increased transparency and accountability in revenue management, urging government authorities to prioritise the efficient use of public resources for national development.

Obi described the development as “deeply troubling,” adding that the discrepancy suggests systemic irregularities. He further argued that the issue reflects what he termed “institutionalised corruption on a massive scale,” drawing parallels with past concerns over unaccounted public funds.

The former Anambra State governor warned that Nigeria risks a paradox of rising revenues alongside declining investment in essential sectors, stressing the need for urgent reforms to restore fiscal discipline and public trust.
