MAKURDI:  Eight candidates of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) have been rescued after spending three days in the custody of kidnappers. The students were part of a group abducted from a Benue Links 18-seater bus last Wednesday, April 15, 2026.

The victims were intercepted by gunmen while traveling to Otukpo to sit for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). Following coordinated efforts, they regained their freedom early Sunday morning.

Official Reception at Government House

The rescued individuals, including three females, were escorted to the Benue State Government House in Makurdi by the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ifeanyi Emenari. They were accompanied by parents and guardians for an official reception hosted by Governor Hyacinth Alia.

Observers noted that the students appeared visibly exhausted from the three-day ordeal. State officials confirmed that documentation and preliminary medical assessments are currently underway to ensure the victims receive necessary support before being formally reunited with their families.

Security Briefing

The Commissioner of Police briefed the Governor on the circumstances surrounding the rescue, though specific details regarding the operation remain classified to protect ongoing security strategies in the region.

Governor Alia is expected to address the state regarding the incident, focusing on:

  • Student Safety: Ensuring candidates can reach examination centers securely.

  • Regional Security: Strengthening patrols along the Benue-Otukpo transit corridor.

  • Victim Support: Providing psychological and academic assistance to the affected students.

The state government has reiterated its commitment to the safety of all citizens, particularly students participating in national examinations.
