ABUJA:  Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress for the upcoming 2027 election, has expressed profound relief following the successful rescue of recently abducted schoolchildren and their teachers. While celebrating their safe return, the former Anambra State Governor emphasized that the incident highlights the critical need for a comprehensive overhaul of Nigeria's security framework.

In a statement released on his official X handle, Obi extended his gratitude to the security forces and all behind-the-scenes stakeholders who contributed to the successful operation. However, he cautioned that the joyful outcome should not divert attention from the broader, systemic issue of widespread kidnappings across the nation.

Obi asserted that ensuring a safe learning environment is a fundamental right for students, noting that the federal government must prioritize the protection of lives and property above all else. He called for immediate, proactive strategies to eliminate the threat of violence and abductions from educational institutions, reinforcing his vision for a secure nation.

The rescue was officially confirmed by the Presidency, which detailed a coordinated security operation that resulted in the safe recovery of all victims. According to Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the operation was executed without making concessions or engaging in negotiations with the criminal elements, despite their demands for the release of a detained leader.

Onanuga reported that security operatives neutralised several of the abductors during the mission, while eight additional suspects were apprehended and transferred to the custody of the Department of State Services.

Following their liberation, the rescued students and teachers released a video statement expressing their appreciation to President Bola Tinubu and the nation's security agencies for their decisive action. Both President Tinubu and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde have also publicly commended the armed forces for the precision and success of the operation.
