Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has criticized the Presidency’s reliance on the interim report from the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission regarding the alleged Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council scandal.
In a statement issued through his office, Atiku argued that the preliminary findings point to systemic vulnerabilities and negligence within government structures rather than the actions of a single individual. He noted that the operation of a fictitious agency—complete with the use of government offices, the generation of forged documentation, and the opening of official-facing bank accounts—raises serious questions regarding institutional oversight.
The statement emphasized that the identification of public officers whose negligence potentially facilitated the scheme indicates a need for broader accountability. Atiku called for the full disclosure of the investigative findings, the public identification of any officials involved, and the complete publication of the final report once investigations conclude.
Furthermore, Atiku urged the National Assembly to launch a comprehensive, publicly broadcast investigation into the matter. He asserted that live television coverage would ensure public trust and address concerns regarding potential protection of influential figures, maintaining that government transparency must extend to all levels of administration.
