DUTSE, JIGAWA — The Jigawa State Police Command has taken a 27-year-old man, Kabiru Nuhu, into custody for allegedly setting his 60-year-old father ablaze in the Kazaure Local Government Area.
The incident occurred at approximately 6:30 am on April 1, 2026, in the Magama Quarters of Kazaure town. According to a statement released on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Shi’isu Adam, preliminary investigations suggest the suspect doused his father in a petroleum-based substance before igniting it.
Emergency Response and Fatality
Police arrived at the scene following a distress call from Lokon Malamai. Upon arrival, officers discovered the elderly victim in critical condition. The suspect, Kabiru Nuhu, was also found at the scene suffering from fresh burns and injuries to his forehead, arms, and toes.
While the victim was immediately transported to a nearby medical facility for emergency treatment, he tragically succumbed to his injuries.
Legal Proceedings
DSP Adam confirmed that the suspect is currently in detention and faces charges of patricide.
"The suspect will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Dutse for further investigation and subsequent prosecution," the PPRO stated.
Call for Calm
The Commissioner of Police for Jigawa State, Haruna Yahaya, condemned the attack in the strongest terms. While calling for public restraint, the Commissioner assured citizens that the command is working diligently to establish a motive for the assault.
"We are working to ensure justice is served," Yahaya said. He further urged residents to seek peaceful resolutions to domestic disputes and to proactively report signs of brewing violence to the authorities.
The Command reaffirmed its dedication to maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety of all residents within the state.
