Tinubu Orders Manhunt for Plateau Killers, Pledges 5,000 Surveillance Cameras to Curb Attacks

JOS, NIGERIA — President Bola Tinubu has issued a stern directive to Nigeria’s top security chiefs and the Minister of Defence to apprehend the perpetrators of the recent killings in Plateau State. Speaking during a town hall meeting with stakeholders in Jos on Thursday, the President mandated an immediate intensification of security measures to end the cycle of violence in the region.

The President’s visit follows the tragic Palm Sunday attack in Angwan Rukuba, Jos North, where gunmen claimed the lives of more than 28 residents. Condemning the massacre, President Tinubu emphasized his administration's commitment to human life, stating, “I was not elected to create widows and widowers.”

Technological Intervention: 5,000 CCTV Cameras

In a significant move to modernize the state's security infrastructure, President Tinubu announced the deployment of 5,000 security cameras across Plateau State. The initiative aims to:

  • Enhance Intelligence Gathering: Provide real-time data to security agencies.

  • Improve Surveillance: Monitor high-risk areas prone to insurgent activity.

  • Facilitate Rapid Response: Enable quicker intervention during security breaches.

State Leadership Vows Resilience

Governor Caleb Mutfwang, who received the President, described the Sunday incident as a "temporary setback" to the state's recent progress in attracting foreign and local investment. While acknowledging that the security crisis has persisted for nearly three decades, Mutfwang praised the President for fostering a new spirit of unity among Plateau’s leadership.

"With the support of the Federal Government and our security forces, we will reclaim our identity as the Home of Peace and Tourism," Mutfwang stated.

Stakeholder Appeals for Lasting Peace

The meeting also featured contributions from key regional figures:

  • Former Governor Jonah Jang: Requested a follow-up high-level meeting in Abuja to discuss long-term strategic solutions and warned against political sabotage.

  • Senator Simon Lalong & Gbong Gwom Jos: Offered goodwill messages, signaling a unified front among traditional and political institutions.

The federal government’s dual approach—combining aggressive pursuit of criminals with a massive technological rollout—marks a pivotal shift in the strategy to stabilize one of Nigeria’s most volatile North-Central states.
