The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has dismissed allegations linking it to Uber's withdrawal from the Nigerian market. Managing Director Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku clarified that the ride-hailing company's exit stemmed entirely from its own internal economic and regulatory choices rather than any directive or action by the authority.

Addressing the operational landscape at Nigerian airports, Kuku emphasized that FAAN's core mandate remains centered on passenger safety and maintaining seamless travel standards. She highlighted that the authority received a high volume of formal complaints from travelers, particularly peak periods like the December holidays, regarding subpar experiences with certain e-hailing and car-hire operators. Reported infractions included driver intimidation, inflated fares, and passengers being diverted to unauthorized destinations.

According to Kuku, discussions between FAAN and e-hailing platforms hit roadblocks over issues of passenger liability and the operational management of designated airport pickup zones. While FAAN agreed to allocate dedicated pickup areas for app-based services, disagreements arose because the companies classified drivers as independent contractors rather than direct employees, refusing to accept formal legal liability for driver conduct. This lack of accountability created severe safety vulnerabilities for airport users.

To address these security challenges and enhance transparency, FAAN implemented the Airport Car Hire Rank Management System (ACHRAMS) to ensure all transport providers operating within airport premises are properly identified and monitored. Kuku stressed that the authority does not dictate consumer choice or collect commissions on behalf of drivers, noting that passengers retain full autonomy to select between e-hailing services and traditional airport car-hire options.
