The internal turmoil within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) intensified on Thursday as several high-profile loyalists and associates of Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, officially resigned from the party.

The mass exodus marks a significant escalation in the protracted crisis that has fractured the party into competing factions—most notably those aligned with Governor Makinde and those loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

Prominent Chieftains Exit the Fold

As of Thursday evening, at least ten prominent political figures in Oyo State had announced their departure. The defectors include high-ranking legislative members and executive aides, signaling a potential shift in the state's political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Among those who have vacated their positions within the party are:

  • Ambassador Olufemi Oguntoyinbo: A former gubernatorial aspirant.

  • Mr. Fatai Owoseni: Special Adviser to the Governor on Security.

  • Engineer Akeem Olatunji: Chairman of the Oluyole Local Government Area and former State Publicity Secretary.

  • Rt. Hon. Abiodun Fadeyi: Deputy Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly.

  • Hon. Anthony Adepoju: Member of the House of Representatives (Ibarapa North/Ibarapa Central).

  • Hon. Abass Adigun: Member of the House of Representatives (Ibadan North East/Ibadan South East).

  • Hon. Adedeji Olajide: Member of the House of Representatives (Ibadan North West/Ibadan South West).

Cited Reasons: Internal Friction and Governance Concerns

Speaking on the development, Deputy Speaker Abiodun Fadeyi confirmed his resignation, citing the persistent internal instability as the primary catalyst for his decision.

Similarly, Engineer Akeem Olatunji attributed his exit to the "bastardization" of the party's structure, specifically pointing to the influence of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike. Olatunji emphasized that the move was necessary to ensure his constituents continue to receive "the dividends of good governance" outside the current PDP framework.

Speculation Surrounding Future Alliances

While several of the outgoing members expressed dissatisfaction with the PDP’s current direction, none have officially declared their next political destination. However, there is growing speculation within political circles that the group may be headed toward the Allied Peoples’ Movement (APM).

"The party has been embroiled in a series of crises in the last few months... we need to give the people of our constituency the opportunity to enjoy good governance." — Engineer Akeem Olatunji

As the fallout continues, reports suggest that more of the Governor’s loyalists are prepared to exit the party in the coming days, further complicating the PDP's efforts to maintain a unified front in the South-West.
