Kwankwaso Defects to ADC, Fuelling Speculation of 2027 "Third Force" Alliance

KANO — The Nigerian political landscape witnessed a major tremor this weekend as Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), officially resigned from the party to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The move, confirmed by both the Kwankwasiyya Movement and ADC leadership, is seen as a strategic realignment aimed at consolidating opposition forces ahead of the 2027 general elections. Kwankwaso is expected to formally register at his Kano residence today.

A Strategic Exit from NNPP

In a formal resignation letter, the former Kano State Governor described his departure as a "necessary" step dictated by the current political trajectory of the nation.

"Considering the current trajectory of the nation’s political landscape, which calls for strategic realignment, I have found it necessary to identify with another political platform that offers the best opportunity to effectively change the nation," Kwankwaso stated.

While the move has been met with enthusiasm by his supporters, it has reportedly jolted the NNPP leadership. Internal sources suggest that the party was not formally briefed prior to the announcement, leading to potential friction as some key figures may decline to follow the "Supreme Leader" to his new political home.

Strengthening the Opposition "Third Force"

The ADC has welcomed the development with open arms. National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, noted that Kwankwaso’s entry bolsters the party’s mission to provide a viable alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

"Kwankwaso’s coming will strengthen our party and boost the efforts to sack the APC from power," Abdullahi said, adding that the ADC is eyeing a consensus approach for selecting its 2027 presidential flagbearer to minimize internal friction and costs.

Emerging 2027 Calculations: The Obi-Kwankwaso Factor

The defection has reignited intense speculation regarding a grand opposition coalition. Insiders suggest that Kwankwaso’s "body language" points toward a willingness to support a Southern candidate to maintain national balance—a stark contrast to the ambitions of other northern power brokers like Atiku Abubakar.

High-level negotiations are reportedly ongoing between Kwankwaso and other prominent figures, including Peter Obi and Seyi Makinde. This has led to rumors of a potential "Dream Ticket" that could see the ADC become the primary vehicle for a unified opposition front involving heavyweights like Atiku, Obi, and Rotimi Amaechi.

The Road to 2027

As the ADC positions itself as a "Third Force," the political focus now shifts to how the NNPP will reorganize in the wake of its founder's departure and whether the APC can maintain its cohesion against a rapidly unifying opposition.
