Prominent Nigerian activist Aisha Yesufu has officially announced her resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). Alongside her change in party affiliation, Yesufu declared her intention to contest for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Senatorial seat.
The announcement was made Wednesday via a statement on her official X (formerly Twitter) account. Yesufu cited her continued political alignment with former presidential candidate HE Peter Obi as the primary catalyst for the move.
A Strategic Alignment
Yesufu emphasized that her political trajectory is rooted in a commitment to a specific vision for the country, noting that her initial entry into the ADC was driven by her support for Obi’s leadership.
"The next couple of days will define the future of this nation," Yesufu stated. "This deeper understanding is why I resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as I follow the leadership of HE Peter Obi, who today embodies the hope and aspiration of a Nigeria that works."
From Activism to the Ballot
Known for her vocal role in the #BringBackOurGirls and #EndSARS movements, Yesufu’s transition from a support role to an active candidate marks a significant shift in her political engagement. She framed the move as an act of consistency and personal integrity.
Commitment to Leadership: Yesufu reiterated her loyalty to the political movement led by Peter Obi.
Legislative Ambition: Unlike her previous party involvement, Yesufu confirmed she will be an active participant on the ballot for the FCT Senate.
Political Continuity: She clarified that joining the NDC is the fulfillment of a promise to remain where she believes the most impactful change can occur.
The NDC has yet to release an official statement regarding her candidacy, but the move is expected to heighten competition for the FCT legislative seat as the nation prepares for the upcoming electoral cycle.
