Aisha Yesufu Vows to Oppose Peter Obi Should He Breach Single-Term Pledge
ABUJA — Prominent activist Aisha Yesufu has declared her intention to lead a vigorous opposition against Peter Obi if he secures the presidency and subsequently attempts to seek a second term.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television on Monday, Yesufu emphasized that accountability and integrity must remain at the forefront of Nigerian leadership. She revealed that her support is contingent on Obi honoring his repeated public commitment to serve only four years.
“If Mr. Peter Obi gets into office and decides to do more than one term, I will oppose him with everything in me because he gave his word,” Yesufu stated. “If he has given his word, he has to stick to it.”
A Pre-Election Commitment
Yesufu clarified that Obi’s stance on a single-term limit is not a recent development. According to the activist, the former Anambra State Governor had consistently maintained this position well before the 2023 general election.
She recounted a private meeting held with Obi following the election cycle, where she sought direct clarification on the matter to ensure he remained committed to the timeline.
-
Initial Skepticism: Yesufu admitted she originally questioned the feasibility of a four-year tenure.
-
Direct Reaffirmation: During their discussion, Obi reportedly doubled down on his promise, citing his personal integrity as his bond.
-
Public Trust: Yesufu noted that she has communicated this promise to the public and views any deviation as a breach of trust.
Integrity as a Political Standard
While Yesufu expressed confidence that Obi is a "man who keeps his word," she warned that no leader is above the promises they make to the electorate. She framed her potential opposition not as a personal fallout, but as a necessary check on executive power.
“He said he gave his word. He can’t come back and say that he’s going to do more than one term. We will fight him there,” she added.
The activist’s remarks underscore a growing demand among civil society for Nigerian political leaders to be held strictly accountable to their campaign manifestos and verbal agreements.
