Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has indicated his willingness to withdraw his presidential ambitions in favor of Peter Obi, should the former Anambra State Governor secure the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ticket for the 2027 general elections.
Appearing on Arise News on Wednesday evening, Atiku addressed growing speculation regarding a potential alliance within the ADC, a party currently attracting several high-profile political figures. When asked directly if he would step aside if Obi emerged victorious in a primary contest, Atiku affirmed his commitment to the democratic process.
"Yes, I will step aside for any winner," Atiku stated. When pressed specifically on whether that commitment extended to Peter Obi, his former running mate in the 2019 elections, he responded, "Of course, if he is a contender, why not?"
Democracy Over Hierarchy
The veteran politician dismissed suggestions that stepping down for a former subordinate would be difficult or damaging to his political standing. He emphasized that the selection of a flagbearer must be rooted in established party mechanisms.
"What is difficult there? It is democracy," Atiku noted. "It is either you go through consensus or you go through election. You emerge through consensus or emerge through the electoral process."
A Crowded Field for the ADC Ticket
The ADC has recently become a focal point for major political realignments. While Atiku and Obi are widely considered the leading contenders for the party's presidential nomination, the field remains competitive. Other notable figures believed to be eyeing the ticket include:
-
Rabiu Kwankwaso: Former Governor of Kano State and 2023 NNPP candidate.
-
Rotimi Amaechi: Former Minister of Transportation and former Governor of Rivers State.
Atiku’s comments suggest a shift toward a unified opposition front, prioritizing a collective strategy over individual aspirations as the 2027 political cycle begins to take shape.
