BAUCHI: The anticipated defection of Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) has reportedly collapsed. The move stalled following a breakdown in negotiations regarding a proposed power-sharing arrangement between the Governor's camp and the APC leadership.
Sama’ila Burga, Chairman of the Turaki-led PDP faction in Bauchi, disclosed the development during a press briefing on Saturday. According to Burga, the transition was halted after the APC rejected a proposal that would have granted the Governor’s faction a 60/40 split in the control of the party’s organizational structure within the state.
Points of the Disagreement:
-
Structural Control: The Governor’s team sought a 60% stake in the party hierarchy to ensure political security for his supporters following the move.
-
Negotiation Deadlock: The APC leadership reportedly declined the 60/40 formula, leading to a stalemate in high-level consultations.
-
Political Implications: For now, the Governor and his loyalists within the Turaki-led faction will remain within the PDP, ending months of speculation regarding a realignment of power in Bauchi State.
The failure of these talks highlights the complexities of "big tent" political shifts in Nigeria, where the integration of existing party structures often proves to be the primary hurdle in high-profile defections. Neither the national leadership of the APC nor the Governor’s office has issued an official rebuttal to Burga’s statements as of Saturday evening.
