ADC Warns Tinubu of 2027 Defeat, Cites Economic Hardship and Rising Insecurity
ABUJA: The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has issued a sharp rebuke to President Bola Tinubu, warning that widespread economic distress and deteriorating security have significantly eroded public trust ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement released Friday by National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi, the party claimed the President appears "increasingly detached" from the daily struggles of Nigerians. The ADC argued that the administration’s focus on political manoeuvring outweighs its commitment to addressing the nation's "historic cost-of-living crisis.
War of Words Following National Convention
The exchange follows President Tinubu’s dismissal of criticisms raised during the ADC’s April 14 National Convention. The event featured prominent opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former governors Peter Obi and Rotimi Amaechi.
In response to their critiques, the President characterized the gathering as a "street convention" and accused the leaders of attempting to "privatize" the party. However, the ADC dismissed these claims, asserting that the President was misinformed by "agents of disruption." The party further alleged that the administration has actively "shrunk the democratic space" by denying opposition parties access to public venues like Eagle Square.
Institutional Concerns and Judicial Independence
The ADC statement also raised alarms regarding the separation of powers under the current administration. The party accused President Tinubu of overstepping his executive role by acting as a "referee and commentator" on judicial matters.
"President Bola Ahmed Tinubu cannot be a President and a judge at the same time," the statement read, further alleging that the legislature has been reduced to an "extension of executive convenience."
A Pivot Toward the 2027 Polls
As the political climate intensifies, the ADC highlighted several key factors they believe will define the next election cycle:
-
Economic Ruin: Soaring food inflation and collapsing purchasing power.
-
Security Failures: Ongoing abductions and the spread of insurgency.
-
Political Hypocrisy: Attempts by the administration to court supporters of former President Muhammadu Buhari after previously distancing itself from his record.
The party concluded by stating that the President should be "scared" of the 2027 polls because "the majority of Nigerians have rejected his government." The ADC maintains that it is focused on building a "credible alternative" focused on security, prosperity, and competence.
The Presidency has yet to issue a formal response to the ADC’s latest allegations regarding institutional interference and the "unpresidential" nature of the President's recent remarks.
