ABUJA, NIGERIA:  The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially announced the postponement of its scheduled nationwide voter revalidation exercise. The commission confirmed on Friday that the program will now take place only after the conclusion of the 2027 General Elections.

Decision Following High-Level Deliberations

The resolution was reached during a strategic meeting held on Friday, April 10, 2026, between the Commission and its Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs). In a formal statement, Mohammed Haruna, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, noted that the proposed revalidation was a primary agenda item during the session.

Purpose of the Revalidation Exercise

The voter revalidation exercise serves as a cornerstone of INEC’s efforts to maintain a transparent and reliable electoral framework. Key objectives of the program include:

  • Data Integrity: Verifying and reviewing existing voter records to ensure personal data accuracy.

  • Register Maintenance: Eliminating duplicate entries and removing ineligible names from the National Register of Voters.

  • Voter Participation: Providing citizens with a formal window to confirm their details and rectify clerical errors.

Commitment to Electoral Integrity

While the postponement shifts the timeline for the register's comprehensive audit, INEC reaffirmed its dedication to its core mandate. The Commission emphasized its ongoing commitment to organizing free, fair, credible, and inclusive elections, assuring stakeholders that the integrity of the 2027 polls remains a top priority.

The delay suggests a tactical shift in the Commission’s immediate focus as the country prepares for the next major election cycle.
