Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has formally endorsed the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) decision to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the South. Speaking at the party’s national convention in Abuja on Saturday, Kwankwaso characterized the move as a vital step toward national healing and a reaffirmation of established power-sharing principles.

A Call for Visionary Alliances

In a speech addressing the nation’s current socio-economic challenges, Kwankwaso argued that Nigeria is currently at a "critical crossroads," citing insecurity, economic hardship, and a decline in the quality of education and infrastructure as symptoms of poor leadership.

Drawing on historical precedents, he highlighted how inter-regional cooperation has previously stabilized the nation:

• 1954: The partnership between Aminu Kano’s NEPU and Nnamdi Azikiwe’s NCNC.

• 1960: The coalition between the NPC and NCNC that secured Nigeria's independence.

• The Second Republic: The NPN alliance between Shehu Shagari and Alex Ekwueme.

"I support the decision to zone the presidential ticket of the NDC to the South, so that it allows the region to complete its turn in producing national leadership," Kwankwaso stated. "This represents a true opportunity for national healing."

Convention Outcomes and Strategy

The convention officially approved the zoning of the presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria for a single four-year term. Following this period, the ticket will automatically rotate back to the North.

The motion for zoning was moved by Hon. Afam Victor Ogene (Ogbaru Federal Constituency) and seconded by Hon. Seyi Sowunmi. This strategic resolution effectively paves the way for prominent Southern figures, including former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, to seek the party’s nomination.

The New Political Landscape

The NDC's growing influence follows the high-profile defection of both Kwankwaso and Obi from the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The duo officially joined the NDC on May 3, 2026, receiving their membership cards at the party’s national secretariat.

Earlier in the proceedings, NDC National Chairman, Senator Cleopas Moses Zuwoghe, reaffirmed the party’s commitment to constitutional governance and urged supporters to intensify mobilization efforts ahead of the 2027 general elections.
