Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) Zones 2027 Presidential Ticket to South, Sets Single Four-Year Term

ABUJA:  The newly registered Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria, specifically earmarking the slot for a single four-year term. This strategic decision was ratified during the party's maiden National Convention held at the Los Angeles Event Centre in Abuja.

The resolution, which also allocates the vice-presidential slot to the North, effectively clears the path for former Anambra State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, along with other Southern aspirants, to vie for the party’s nomination.

A Strategic Framework for National Unity

The motion for the zoning arrangement was moved by Hon. Victor Ogene, representing the Ogbaru Federal Constituency. Ogene emphasized that the decision is rooted in the principles of equity and national stability, designed to address long-standing debates regarding power rotation in Nigeria.

“This decision is more than a political arrangement; it is a moral statement on national cohesion,” Ogene stated. “By rotating the presidency to the South in 2027 for a single term before returning it to the North in 2031, we are taking active steps to reduce regional tensions and ensure every part of the country feels a sense of inclusion.”

Obi and Kwankwaso Signal Potential Alliance

Addressing the convention, Peter Obi clarified that his participation in the NDC is a principled move rather than a transactional one. He positioned the party as a vehicle to rescue Nigeria from what he termed "leadership failure" and a "consumption-based economy."

Key highlights from Peter Obi’s address:

  • Economic Shift: A commitment to transitioning Nigeria from a consumption-based to a production-driven economy.

  • Democratic Integrity: A stern warning against the emergence of a one-party state and a call for free, fair, and credible elections in 2027.

  • National Security: A promise to restore safety across all regions, from Kano and Sokoto to Rivers and Benue.

Supporting the zoning resolution, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, the 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, described the move as a "courageous step toward national healing." Kwankwaso, widely tipped as a potential running mate for Obi under this new alliance, lamented the current state of insecurity and economic decline, calling for visionary alliances to reposition the country.

Overcoming Regulatory Hurdles

The National Leader of the NDC and former Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Seriake Dickson, addressed the challenges the party faced in securing registration. He confirmed that despite administrative and legal hurdles, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officially registered the party in February 2026.

Dickson used the platform to criticize the current political landscape, alleging that the ruling party is actively intimidating the opposition and shrinking the democratic space.

Building a Movement for Governance

Earlier, the National Chairman of the NDC, Senator Moses Cleopas, welcomed delegates by framing the party not merely as an electoral machine, but as a "movement for governance." He noted that the NDC aims to provide a credible alternative for millions of Nigerians currently facing economic hardship and institutional distrust.

The convention concluded with a unanimous endorsement of the zoning formula, signaling the NDC's intent to emerge as a disciplined and reform-oriented force ahead of the 2027 general elections.
