Former Kano State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, hosted a high-level delegation from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) at his Abuja residence on Monday, fueling further speculation regarding political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The NDC delegation, which included the party’s National Vice-Chairman for the North-West, Mohammed Bakin, reportedly used the consultative visit to formally invite Kwankwaso to join their ranks.

Shifts in the Opposition Landscape

This meeting follows weeks of intensifying rumors concerning a potential heavyweight alliance between Kwankwaso and Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate. Grassroots supporters recently signaled their endorsement of this partnership through the launch of the “OK Movement,” a strategic initiative aimed at consolidating the political capital of both leaders.

However, Kwankwaso’s current political trajectory appears complicated by the internal instability of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The party is currently embroiled in a leadership crisis, with the Supreme Court reserving judgment on April 22 regarding a factional dispute between groups led by former Senate President David Mark and Nafiu Bala.

The Race Against the INEC Timetable

As the 2027 cycle approaches, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has established May 30, 2026, as the deadline for parties to submit membership lists and nominate candidates.

In response, a coalition of opposition parties—including the ADC, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), and a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)—has petitioned INEC for an extension. These parties are advocating for the primaries deadline to be moved to late July, arguing that the current schedule places them at a strategic disadvantage compared to the ruling party.

Key Takeaway: The meeting between Kwankwaso and the NDC underscores a period of intense horse-trading as opposition figures attempt to navigate legal hurdles and rigid electoral timelines to form a formidable front for the next election cycle.
