Obi: US Embassy Evacuation Signals Global Loss of Confidence in Nigeria’s Security

ABUJA — Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has described the United States' decision to evacuate embassy personnel from Nigeria as a "national emergency." In a strongly worded statement on Friday, Obi warned that the move reflects a dangerous decline in international confidence regarding Nigeria’s leadership and internal security.

The former governor argued that the withdrawal of foreign diplomatic staff highlights Nigeria’s worsening instability, threatening to further isolate an already fragile economy and deter critical foreign investment.

A Systemic Failure of Governance

Obi pointed to Nigeria’s ranking as fourth on the Global Terrorism Index as evidence of a deteriorating security architecture. He criticized the current administration for what he termed a "glaring absence of effective governance," suggesting that political interests have taken precedence over the fundamental duty of protecting citizens.

“A nation where citizens cannot live, work, worship, or travel safely cannot make progress or inspire investor confidence,” Obi stated. “The primary responsibility of any government is the protection of lives and property. In this regard, we as leaders have consistently fallen short.”

Tribute to the Armed Forces

The statement also addressed the heavy toll the crisis is taking on the military, specifically citing reports of the death of a Nigerian Army Brigadier General in Borno State. Obi noted that the failure of political leadership places an "immense strain" on the armed forces, who continue to make the ultimate sacrifice in a worsening environment.

The "Nero" Comparison

Drawing a historical parallel, Obi likened the current political class to the Roman Emperor Nero, accusing them of being preoccupied with political manoeuvring while the nation "deteriorates." He warned that without an immediate and drastic shift in security strategy, there would be "no nation to govern and no future to contest."

Key Takeaways from the Statement

  • National Emergency: The US evacuation is viewed as a definitive signal of fading international trust.

  • Economic Impact: Security failures are directly linked to the country’s inability to attract and retain investment.

  • Leadership Critique: Obi calls for a shift from political pursuits to the basic welfare and safety of the Nigerian people.
