President Bola Tinubu has reportedly declined a proposal from members of the Senate seeking guaranteed automatic tickets" for the 2027 general elections. The President instead reaffirmed the authority of state governors in determining candidate selection within the party structure.

The decision followed an unannounced "emergency and strategic" meeting on Wednesday at the Presidential Villa, held between the President and the extended leadership of the Senate, led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Strategic Stalemate at the Villa

The meeting was convened shortly after the upper chamber adjourned a closed-door executive session. While official government communications characterized the talks as focusing on "matters of urgent national importance," sources familiar with the deliberations revealed that the primary agenda was the political survival of sitting lawmakers.

According to a senior National Assembly source, the delegation lobbied the President for assurances that loyal senators would be shielded from internal party primaries, arguing that "continuity and stability" were essential for legislative efficiency.

President Tinubu, however, remained firm in his stance on party hierarchy.

"The President was very clear," the source disclosed. "He told them plainly that governors are the leaders of the party in their respective states and must maintain a decisive say in who emerges as candidates."

Official Silence on Specifics

While the substance of the rejection was not included in official briefings, presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga confirmed the meeting via social media, noting that "far-reaching decisions" were reached.

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele echoed this sentiment in a separate statement, confirming that the engagement was a direct response to issues raised during the Senate’s private session earlier that day.

Implications for 2027

The President's refusal to bypass state governors signals a commitment to maintaining the traditional power dynamics within the All Progressives Congress (APC). By insisting on the "central role" of governors, Tinubu effectively places the political fate of many senators back into the hands of their state executives, potentially setting the stage for intense internal power struggles as the next election cycle approaches.

The development underscores a calculated move by the Presidency to avoid friction with state governors, who remain the primary custodians of party structures and grassroots mobilization across the federation.
