Nigerian Opposition Coalitions Resolve to Field Single Presidential Candidate for 2027

IBADAN, Nigeria:  In a significant shift in the country's political landscape, Nigeria’s opposition parties have formally agreed to field a unified presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections. The announcement was made by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, a factional National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), during the National Opposition Summit held Saturday in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The summit, attended by high-ranking leaders including former Senate President David Mark, served as a platform for opposition figures to strategize against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

A Strategy for Unified Resistance

Addressing the delegates, Turaki emphasized that the decision to consolidate under a single candidate is a direct response to what he characterized as efforts by the ruling party to stifle competition. He alleged that there are ongoing "machinations" intended to position President Bola Tinubu as an unopposed candidate within the APC framework.

"Despite the onslaughts and machinations of the ruling party to ensure that President Bola Tinubu emerges as the sole presidential candidate in 2027, we shall field candidates and contest the 2027 presidential and other elections," Turaki stated.

The coalition’s primary objective, according to Turaki, is to "rescue the nation" and address the "long suffering" of the Nigerian masses amid current economic and security exigencies.

Calls for INEC Leadership Reform

Beyond electoral strategy, the summit participants issued a stern demand for the resignation of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan.

The opposition leaders leveled several allegations against the INEC chair, including:

  • Perceived Partisanship: Accusations of open bias in favor of the APC.

  • Loss of Public Trust: Claims that the electorate no longer views the commission as a neutral arbiter.

  • Risk of Instability: Concerns that Amupitan’s leadership could trigger widespread political crises ahead of the 2027 polls.

"His continued stay in office is vexatious and capable of triggering widespread crises in our nation," the communique noted, further asserting that a transparent and credible election cannot be guaranteed under the current leadership.

Looking Toward 2027

The summit concluded with a renewed call for total unity among opposition factions and urgent electoral reforms. By moving toward a single-candidate model, the coalition aims to prevent the fragmentation of the opposition vote a factor that has historically benefited the incumbent party in Nigerian politics.

While the ruling APC has yet to issue an official response to the summit's declarations, the move marks an early and aggressive start to the 2027 election cycle.
