Tensions in Lebanon have intensified as a series of Israeli air strikes targeted multiple vehicles south of Beirut, resulting in at least 12 fatalities, according to Lebanon’s Ministry of Health. These strikes occurred across the Barja, Jiyeh, and Saadiyat areas, as well as further south in Sidon, Maaliyeh, Chaaitiyeh, and Naqoura.

Military Activity and Humanitarian Concerns

The Israeli military has confirmed strikes on various locations in southern Lebanon, stating that they targeted Hezbollah weapons storage facilities and rocket launchers. Additionally, residents of nine towns and villages in the region have been issued evacuation orders due to anticipated military operations against Hezbollah.

In response, Hezbollah reported continued attacks on Israeli forces, utilizing drones, rockets, and explosive devices.

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has expressed "increasing concern" regarding activities near its positions. The organization highlighted the elevated use of drones, which has resulted in explosions near UN bases, raising significant safety risks for peacekeepers.

Disputed Accounts of Civilian Casualties

Recent days have seen conflicting reports regarding the targeting of non-combatants:

  • Paramedics and Emergency Response: The Lebanese Ministry of Health reported that 13 people, including two Civil Defence paramedics, were killed in southern Lebanon on Tuesday. The ministry characterized the event as a "blatant violation of international humanitarian law," alleging that rescue workers were deliberately targeted.

  • Israeli Military Stance: Israeli authorities have denied targeting rescue personnel. Regarding the incident involving paramedics, the military stated they were pursuing a specific "terrorist" threat in the Mayfadoun area and that the strike was directed solely at that objective.

  • Targeting of Residential Areas: In a separate incident in the Kfar Dounine area, the military stated that a strike which resulted in six civilian deaths—including a child—was aimed at a Hezbollah operative conducting an artillery attack.

Regional Context and Diplomatic Outlook

According to the Lebanese Ministry of Health, the death toll in Lebanon has reached at least 2,896 since the conflict began on March 2, with over 400 of these fatalities recorded since the announcement of a ceasefire nearly one month ago. Additionally, the National Council for Scientific Research reports that more than 10,600 homes have been damaged or destroyed during this period.

On the diplomatic front, Israeli and Lebanese officials are scheduled to participate in a third round of direct talks in Washington this Thursday. Despite these efforts, Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem has stated that the organization intends to remain on the battlefield.
