Donald Trump has said the United States and Iran are “very close” to reaching an agreement, adding that talks could resume as early as this weekend.
The comments come as a 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon has taken effect. Trump described the moment as a “historic day” for Lebanon and expressed hope that Hezbollah would adhere to the terms of the truce.
Despite the agreement, Israel and Hezbollah exchanged strikes in the hours leading up to the midnight (21:00 GMT) deadline, underscoring ongoing tensions. The ceasefire is considered fragile, offering limited respite rather than a long-term resolution.
Israel has stated that its forces will remain in a 10km-deep “security zone” in southern Lebanon and has warned displaced residents against returning to the area for now.
Separately, the UK and France are set to co-chair a meeting on freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz later on Friday, with around 40 countries expected to take part.
