Israel has conducted fresh airstrikes across southern Lebanon following warnings from Iran against continued operations in the country. The Lebanese health ministry reported eight fatalities in Tyre after the Israeli military issued an expanded evacuation order that, for the first time, included the city's Christian quarter.
The renewed hostilities follow a brief pause on Monday, which was triggered by an Israeli strike in Beirut targeting the Iranian-backed armed group Hezbollah and a subsequent direct exchange of fire between Israel and Iran. While Iran warned of further retaliation if strikes in Lebanon persisted, Israel maintained its commitment to countering Hezbollah. This ongoing friction adds complexity to regional diplomatic efforts aimed at brokering a comprehensive resolution involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
Expanded Evacuation Orders and Casualties
Lebanese state media reported that recent Israeli air and artillery strikes resulted in at least 13 deaths. This included two individuals killed in an early morning drone strike near Nabatieh. Following these actions, the Israeli military directed residents of Tyre and surrounding areas to evacuate immediately to points north of the Zahrani River.
The inclusion of the Christian quarter marked a shift in the evacuation scope. The Israeli military stated this decision was based on intelligence indicating that Hezbollah operatives had been active in the area during the previous week. The directives prompted a significant displacement of residents, causing severe traffic congestion on northbound routes.
According to provisional data from the Lebanese health ministry, an airstrike in the eastern al-Massaken al-Shaabiya district of Tyre killed eight people and injured 32 others, with search and rescue operations continuing through the debris. An additional five injuries were reported following a separate strike in the central al-Raml neighborhood.
Framework of the Conflict
The Israeli military indicated its actions in Tyre were a response to ceasefire violations by Hezbollah and continued attacks directed at northern Israel. Additionally, Israeli authorities reported that troops neutralized an armed individual who crossed the border from Lebanon into the Ramim Ridge region.
In response, Hezbollah confirmed it had targeted Israeli military positions and vehicles along the border using rockets and attack drones. The broader conflict escalated significantly in March following an Israeli strike that killed Iran's supreme leader, prompting retaliatory rocket fire from Hezbollah and a subsequent large-scale Israeli military campaign in southern Lebanon.
Diplomatic Strain and Cross-Border Engagements
Despite a US-brokered ceasefire agreement in mid-April, stability has remained elusive. International intermediaries have consistently urged a reduction in military operations to facilitate broader diplomatic talks with Iran. While Israel previously agreed to limit strikes on specific areas in Beirut, political and military friction persisted, and Hezbollah rejected a subsequent ceasefire renewal due to demands regarding troop withdrawals.
The situation intensified over the weekend when an Israeli strike on a Hezbollah command center in Beirut prompted Iran to launch approximately 30 ballistic missile barrages toward Israeli infrastructure. Israel reported successful interceptions and retaliated with airstrikes targeting Iranian air defense systems and industrial sites.
Although Iranian authorities later announced a halt to direct military operations, they reiterated warnings of severe consequences should Israeli strikes continue in Lebanon. Israeli leadership countered by stating that while operations were paused temporarily, the military remained prepared to respond decisively to any further security threats.
