LAGOS NIGERIA: The Nigeria Police Force (NPF), acting through the INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB) in Abuja, has officially extradited Matthew Chukwuemeka Adebiyi to the United Kingdom. Adebiyi faces serious criminal charges, including murder and trafficking of Class-A controlled substances.
Background of the Case
The extradition is the result of a formal request issued by British authorities in September 2024. Adebiyi is a primary suspect in the June 18, 2018, killing of Joshua Boadu. Investigators allege that the suspect fled to Nigeria shortly after the incident to evade prosecution.
In addition to the murder charge, UK officials identified Adebiyi as a key figure in a drug distribution network responsible for supplying crack cocaine between October 2017 and March 2018.
Legal Proceedings and Arrest
Following intensive intelligence gathering, INTERPOL operatives apprehended Adebiyi on January 23, 2025. The NPF subsequently initiated legal proceedings at the Federal High Court in Lagos.
On February 16, 2026, Honourable Justice A.O. Faji ruled in favor of the extradition application, citing compliance with the Extradition Act, Cap E25, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
Formal Handover
The process culminated on April 14, 2026, at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos. Following the execution of a surrender warrant, Adebiyi was handed over to UK law enforcement officials for transport back to the United Kingdom to stand trial.
Commitment to Global Security
Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu reaffirmed the Force's dedication to international law enforcement partnerships.
"The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to strengthening global cooperation," IGP Disu stated. "We will continue to ensure that Nigeria does not become a safe haven for fugitives attempting to escape justice for crimes committed abroad.
