MOSCOW: The Russian government has intensified its rhetoric against international defense suppliers, specifically naming an Israeli firm as part of a broader warning to European nations supporting Ukraine’s unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) program.
Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council, characterized European drone production facilities as “legitimate targets” for the Russian military. In a statement posted to X, Medvedev accused European governments of escalating the conflict by transforming the continent into a "strategic rear" for Kyiv through expanded joint ventures and increased funding.
Identification of Israeli Technology
According to a list published by the Russian Defense Ministry, Elsight, a communications technology firm based in Haifa, Israel, has been identified as a supplier of critical components. Moscow alleges the company provides cellular connectivity modules that are essential for the remote control and communication systems of Ukrainian drones.
As of the time of reporting, neither Elsight nor Israeli government officials have issued a formal response to the Russian allegations.
Geographic Scope of Russian Allegations
The Kremlin claims that Ukrainian drone manufacturing has established a footprint across eight European nations. The Russian Defense Ministry’s list identifies several major European cities as hubs for manufacturing or component supply:
-
Manufacturing Hubs: London, Munich, Prague, and Riga.
-
Component Suppliers: Haifa (Israel), Madrid (Spain), Venice (Italy), and various locations across Germany, Turkey, and the Czech Republic.
Escalation of Threats
The warnings follow a reported decision by European leaders in late March to significantly bolster UAV production to assist Ukraine’s defense efforts. Medvedev’s comments signal a potential shift in Russian targeting doctrine, suggesting that facilities located outside of the immediate conflict zone could be subject to military action if they are deemed vital to Ukraine's tactical capabilities.
While Russia has frequently issued warnings to Western allies, the specific naming of private enterprises like Elsight marks a targeted approach to pressure the global defense supply chain.
