US President Donald Trump has said that Israeli and Lebanese leaders have agreed to a 10-day ceasefire, due to begin at 17:00 EST (22:00 BST).
Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah have been engaged in ongoing hostilities in Lebanon. Early indications from the group suggest it is likely to adhere to the proposed truce, according to regional reporting.
Lebanon’s prime minister has welcomed the agreement. There has been no immediate response from Israel, although the country’s Security Cabinet has convened an urgent meeting.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is facing renewed pressure from Washington to align with US policy objectives, amid continued diplomatic engagement.
Mr Trump added that he intends to invite Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Mr Netanyahu to the White House for further talks.
The developments follow Israeli air strikes that destroyed a key bridge connecting southern Lebanon to other parts of the country. Israel has said its operations are aimed at Hezbollah positions.
Meanwhile, towns and villages across southern Lebanon have sustained extensive damage amid ongoing Israeli military activity.
