North Korea launched multiple short-range ballistic missiles toward the East Sea, according to the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff. The missiles traveled approximately 250 kilometers after being fired from the Wonsan area early Saturday morning.

This military action followed the conclusion of a five-day joint maritime exercise involving South Korea, the United States, and Japan. Pyongyang previously criticized these drills, known as Freedom Edge, as a regional security threat and consistent rehearsals for an invasion. South Korean and United States intelligence agencies tracked the launches and coordinated information with Japanese authorities.

The recent missile tests coincide with shifting diplomatic signals between Washington and Pyongyang. United States President Donald Trump expressed intentions to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un this year and ordered scaled-back joint military exercises, describing the traditional drills as inappropriate and hostile toward North Korea. Despite these diplomatic overtures, regional allies expressed concern over the reduction in military readiness.

Pyongyang continues to expand its nuclear arsenal while blaming South Korea's security alignment with the United States for regional instability. Senior North Korean officials recently criticized Seoul's security outlook following the adjustment of the joint exercises, reflecting ongoing tensions on the Korean Peninsula despite prospects for renewed bilateral summits.
