The incident took place at approximately 20:35 ET (00:35 GMT) at the Washington Hilton, where gunfire erupted as a suspect attempted to breach a security checkpoint. President Donald Trump was immediately rushed to safety by the Secret Service and was not injured.
Suspect in Custody
Authorities have identified the suspect as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen of Torrance. Allen was apprehended by the Secret Service after allegedly charging through a magnetometer screening area while armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives.
According to federal investigators, Allen stated during initial questioning that he was intentionally targeting officials within the Trump administration. He is expected to be formally arraigned in federal court this Monday on charges including assault on a federal officer and firearms offenses.
Security Detail Injured
During the confrontation, a Secret Service agent was shot at close range. President Trump later confirmed that the officer's life was saved by his bulletproof vest.
"One officer was shot at very close range, but he is doing well," Trump said during a press conference at the White House. "The vest did the job. The Secret Service did a fantastic job."
