The United States military has launched targeted airstrikes against Iranian positions following an attack on a commercial cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz. US Central Command (Centcom) confirmed the operation targeted missile and drone storage facilities, as well as coastal radar installations.

The military action was ordered after a Singapore-flagged vessel, the Ever Lovely, was struck by a drone while navigating a recommended international maritime route near Oman. The incident disrupted a planned United Nations operation to evacuate over 11,000 stranded sailors from the region.

Conflict over Maritime Routes and Ceasefire Terms

The strikes mark a significant escalation following a June 17 memorandum of understanding intended to halt hostilities and guarantee free transit through the critical trade corridor.

  • The US Position: Washington maintains that the drone strike was an unprovoked assault on commercial shipping that directly violated the established ceasefire and undermined global freedom of navigation.

  • The Iranian Position: Tehran asserted that the cargo ship was targeted for utilizing an unauthorized route. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) labeled the US response an act of aggression and claimed to have conducted retaliatory strikes against US military positions in the region.

Diplomatic and Economic Implications

The Strait of Hormuz remains a vital economic chokepoint. A previous closure of the waterway earlier this year triggered sharp increases in global energy prices and disrupted the transit of essential commodities like fertilizer.

Prior to the latest hostilities, bilateral discussions had reportedly been progressing, with US officials indicating that Iran had agreed to waive transit fees, tolls, and additional insurance costs for commercial vessels. However, conflicting statements from Iranian negotiators suggested that future administration of the strait would fundamentally change compared to pre-war protocols.

Following the air strikes, US officials emphasized that further violence would be met with decisive military responses, while Iranian lawmakers accused the US of undermining ongoing negotiations. The United Nations International Maritime Organization has suspended its sailor evacuation efforts indefinitely due to the renewed instability.
