The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, convened a meeting with organized labour leaders on Monday to resolve tensions regarding the proposed administrative restructuring of King’s College, Lagos. Government officials, including the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, and acting Permanent Secretary, Dr. Folake Olatunji-Davies, met with representatives from the Trade Union Congress and the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria.

Labor unions had previously expressed strong reservations over the term “concessioning,” which triggered uncertainty regarding job security and the institution's future, ultimately prompting workers in federal unity schools to temporarily threaten industrial action. Addressing these concerns, Dr. Alausa emphasized that while employee welfare remains a priority, reforms must align with broader national interests and the educational needs of Nigerian students.

The acting Permanent Secretary clarified that staff members will retain their civil service status under any new framework. Affected employees will be given the choice to either continue working at King’s College under the updated administrative model or transfer to alternative schools within Lagos State. A dedicated committee will be established to oversee the transition process, ensure transparent stakeholder communication, and safeguard the legacy of the historic 1909 institution.

Trade Union Congress General Secretary Nuhu Toro acknowledged that high-level interventions successfully halted potential strikes, enabling both parties to pursue resolution through constructive dialogue. Discussions remain ongoing as the Ministry of Education works to finalize reform terms that protect workers' rights while optimizing public educational resources.
