Ahead of Nigeria's 2027 general elections, political tensions are rising as opposition parties express serious concerns regarding campaign financing and what they describe as an uneven playing field. Major political groups including the Nigeria Democratic Congress, the Peoples Democratic Party, the Peoples Redemption Party, the Young Progressives Party, and the Obidient Movement Worldwide argue that the ruling All Progressives Congress holds an unfair financial advantage. Opposition leaders contend that widespread economic hardship and the fear of political reprisals are deterring potential donors from supporting rival parties, leaving them struggling to compete.

These anxieties have intensified following the passage of the Electoral Act 2026, which substantially increases campaign expenditure limits across all levels of government. Under the new legislation, the maximum spending cap for presidential candidates has doubled from 5 billion naira to 10 billion naira, while governorship limits have risen from 1 billion naira to 3 billion naira. Similar increases apply to legislative and local government races, with individual and corporate donation limits also raised from 50 million naira to 500 million naira. The National Assembly defended the upward review as a necessary adjustment to counter inflation and soaring costs for advertising, logistics, and organization. However, opposition figures argue that these higher ceilings further entrench the dominance of heavily funded parties.

Rather than trying to match the ruling party's financial resources, opposition groups are pivoting toward alternative strategies. These include intensive grassroots mobilization, town hall meetings, digital campaigns, voluntary contributions, and coalition-building among rival factions. Leaders from various parties emphasize that direct engagement with voters and a focus on credible policy alternatives will form the cornerstone of their campaigns.

In response, the All Progressives Congress has strongly dismissed the allegations of misusing public funds, challenging critics to provide concrete proof. The ruling party attributes its financial strength to its broad national acceptance, widespread membership, and the voluntary support of major donors rather than any diversion of state resources.
