President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration's commitment to combating terrorism, banditry, and criminal intimidation, while pledging intensified efforts to alleviate the economic hardships currently facing Nigerians.

The President’s message was delivered by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, during the National Inter-Denominational Church Service at the National Christian Centre in Abuja. The event, held under the theme "God of Hope, Actualise Our Dreams," formed part of the activities commemorating the 2026 Democracy Day.

The service drew high-profile state officials, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Okezie Kalu, Minister of Foreign Affairs Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs. Didi Walson-Jack.

Key Highlights of the Presidential Address

Democratic Milestone: The President congratulated citizens on achieving 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule since 1999, characterizing the milestone as a testament to the resilience and sacrifices of the Nigerian people. He also honored the pro-democracy activists of the June 12 struggle, acknowledging the severe persecution and loss of life endured during that period.

Economic and Security Challenges: Acknowledging the widespread economic strain, insecurity, kidnappings, and community displacement, the administration emphasized that it is acutely aware of the public's grievances and is working with compassion and responsibility to resolve them.

National Security Priority: Security agencies are receiving increased resource allocation to protect lives and maintain territorial integrity. The administration emphasized that securing the safe return of all individuals currently held in captivity remains a top national priority.

Call to Action for the 2027 Elections

As political activities accelerate ahead of the 2027 general elections, the federal government has urged citizens to reject violence, hate speech, and divisive rhetoric.

The SGF issued a specific appeal to Nigerian youth, advising them to resist involvement in political thuggery, violence, misinformation campaigns, ethnic abuse, or religious intolerance. Young citizens were cautioned against compromising their principles for financial gain, drugs, political patronage, or social media validation.

The administration concluded by calling upon religious leaders, traditional rulers, civil society organizations, the media, and families to actively foster tolerance and peaceful coexistence. The President also commended the armed forces and security personnel for their continued sacrifices in safeguarding the nation's democracy.
