Fani-Kayode Dismisses ADC, Says Nigeria’s Opposition Has Collapsed

Femi Fani-Kayode, Nigeria’s Ambassador to Germany, has dismissed the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a credible opposition force, describing the party as motivated primarily by a desire for political power.

Speaking on the state of opposition politics in Nigeria, Fani-Kayode characterized the ADC as comprising individuals he considers discredited and incapable of advancing national progress. He further claimed that the opposition landscape in the country has effectively collapsed.

In a Facebook post, the former Aviation Minister said opposition parties have failed in their core role of holding the government accountable, citing internal conflicts and disunity as key obstacles.

He criticized opposition figures for engaging in infighting rather than presenting a coordinated challenge, arguing that their lack of cohesion has rendered them ineffective.

“I don’t see ADC as an opposition party: I see them as an association of people that are desperate for power. Individuals that are discredited, individuals that have no hope in hell of moving this nation forward. The opposition has collapsed in Nigeria,” Fani-Kayode wrote.

He added: “There is no opposition because they don’t even know how to be in opposition. How can they keep the government on its toes when they are busy bickering amongst themselves, fighting amongst themselves and they are fast asleep in bed snoring.”

Femi Fani-Kayode’s comments highlight the deep divisions within African Democratic Congress and reflect a broader concern about the weakness of opposition politics in Nigeria. While his criticism points to real issues like infighting and lack of cohesion, it also represents a partisan perspective, and the strength of the opposition remains a matter of debate.

While Femi Fani-Kayode expresses concerns about disintegration; rejecting groups such as the African Democratic Congress completely ignores the necessity for a stronger, more coordinated opposition to ensure Nigeria's democracy remains healthy.
