PDP Ready for National Convention: Wike Signals Post-Event Reconciliation and Finalizes Zoning

ABUJA – The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has reaffirmed the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) commitment to internal diplomacy, stating that the party remains open to reconciling with aggrieved members following the National Convention scheduled for March 29 and 30.

Speaking late Friday after an inspection of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Velodrome—the designated venue for the event—Wike dismissed ongoing legal challenges from the Tanimu Turaki group, emphasizing that the party’s "umbrella" is wide enough to accommodate all interests.

Commitment to Party Unity

Addressing the internal friction within the fold, Wike acknowledged that grievances are a natural byproduct of a large political organization.

"I have always said that in any group, there will be grievances," Wike stated. "We have agreed to sit down with them, understand their concerns, and see how we can accommodate them. What is most important is the overall interest of the party."

The Minister emphasized that the post-convention phase will focus on "accommodation" and dialogue to ensure a unified front ahead of future political cycles.

Strategic Zoning and Consensus

In a move to ensure a seamless leadership transition, Wike confirmed that the PDP has finalized its zoning arrangements. To balance regional interests, the party has officially allocated the Presidency to the South and the National Chairmanship to the North.

Wike noted that this consensus-driven approach marks a departure from previous internal divisions. "For the first time, the PDP is presenting a unified front. There are no factions. Everyone has agreed on the direction we are taking," he remarked.

Logistics and Venue Readiness

Accompanied by high-ranking officials—including Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu (Convention Planning Chair), Senator Mao Ohuabunwa (BoT Chairman), and Mohammed Abdulrahman (NCWC Chairman)—the Minister expressed 95% satisfaction with the venue preparations.

Key logistical highlights include:

  • Delegate Count: Approximately 2,500 delegates are expected to attend.

  • Infrastructure: Seating arrangements for all state delegations and VIP sections have been finalized.

  • Timeline: Final touches are expected to be completed by Saturday.

With the zoning finalized and the venue prepared, the PDP appears positioned to proceed with its convention, shifting the focus to reconciliation once the new leadership structure is established.
