The Accord Party has formally requested the European Union to intervene in the growing political tensions surrounding the upcoming Osun State governorship election, scheduled for August 15, 2026. In a letter addressed to the EU Ambassador and Head of Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Migot, party leadership urged international diplomatic engagement to safeguard a transparent, fair, and secure electoral process.

The appeal stems from widespread concerns over pre-election political violence, voter intimidation, and security apprehensions across the state. Party representatives highlighted a controversial viral video involving a senior senator—an allegation the senator has denied—which has amplified safety fears among party members and supporters. According to the Accord Party, these incidents risk undermining equitable political participation and eroding the integrity of the vote.

The party reported that approximately 29 fatalities and numerous injuries have been linked to the hostile political climate. Additionally, it claimed that over 60 of its members and supporters were recently detained in Abuja and Nasarawa State, prompting calls for independent transparency regarding those arrests.

Further concerns were raised regarding the timing and perceived partiality of actions taken by federal regulatory and law-enforcement bodies, such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. While acknowledging the statutory authority of anti-corruption agencies, the party emphasized that enforcement activities during an active election cycle must remain impartial, transparent, and strictly compliant with due process to maintain public trust.

To ensure stability ahead of the weekend polls, the Accord Party outlined several key recommendations for the international community:

  • Political Neutrality: Urge the Federal Government, security personnel, and national institutions to uphold strict professionalism and neutrality.

  • Electoral Independence: Call upon the Independent National Electoral Commission to execute its mandate impartially.

  • Observer Support: Encourage robust domestic and international monitoring of the election proceedings.

  • Preventive Diplomacy: Prioritize early diplomatic intervention to prevent violence rather than managing fallout post-election.

The party concluded that the upcoming election serves as a critical benchmark for democratic resilience in Nigeria, emphasizing that international oversight is vital to protecting political pluralism and ensuring citizens can vote free from fear.
