Peter Obi Decries Fatal Airstrike on Borno–Yobe Border, Calls for Defence Overhaul
ABUJA, Nigeria — Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has issued a sharp critique of the federal government’s security strategy following a deadly airstrike at Jilli Market, located along the Borno–Yobe border.
In a statement released Monday via his official X (formerly Twitter) account, titled “Borno–Yobe Border Airstrike: A Wake-Up Call for Nigeria’s Defence Strategy,” Obi expressed profound concern over the recurring instances of accidental military strikes on civilian populations. He described the incident as a symptom of "deep failures" within the nation’s current defence framework.
Casualties and Context
The strike occurred on Saturday in a community situated between Bibio and Dedam, a region where traders and local residents had gathered for a weekly market. While total casualty figures remain under verification, local reports indicate significant fatalities.
Dr. Shehu Mohammed, Medical Director of the Maiduguri Specialist Hospital, confirmed to the press that 21 victims were transported to the facility suffering from varying degrees of injuries.
A Call for Modernization and Accountability
While Obi noted that he had initially delayed comment to avoid "hasty conclusions" while details emerged, he pointed to systemic issues—including aging equipment and coordination lapses—as primary drivers of such tragedies.
"Such tragic incidents are often associated with a combination of factors, including operational constraints, coordination challenges, and limitations in equipment and aging platforms," Obi stated.
To prevent future occurrences, the former Anambra State governor advocated for a three-pronged approach to military reform:
-
Technological Upgrades: Investment in modern fighter jets and the upgrading of existing military platforms.
-
Enhanced Training: Implementation of rigorous, continuous retraining programs for military personnel.
-
Strategic Oversight: Strengthening the coordination of the national security architecture.
Executive Responsibility
Obi concluded his statement by calling directly upon President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to exercise decisive leadership in the face of escalating national insecurity.
"President Bola Ahmed Tinubu must rise fully to the immense challenge of national security," Obi said, emphasizing that sustained investment and accountability are the only ways to "prevent further loss of innocent lives."
He extended his condolences to the bereaved families and the governments of Borno and Yobe States, while reiterating his support for the rank-and-file military personnel who serve under difficult conditions.
