An Iranian drone strike on Kuwait International Airport has resulted in the death of an Indian national and injuries to more than 60 others. Local officials confirmed the casualties following the attack, which the Kuwaiti defense ministry termed an act of aggression. The country's foreign ministry reported damage to diplomatic missions, subsequently ordering two Iranian diplomats to leave the country within 24 hours and summoning Iran's charge d'affaires.

The Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for the strike, stating it was retaliation for recent United States military actions on an Iranian military ground control station on Qeshm Island and an unladen, Botswana-flagged oil tanker. Iran also stated that its operations targeted U.S. military bases and helicopters in the Gulf region.

U.S. Interceptions and Preceding Military Actions

Prior to the airport strike, U.S. Central Command (Centcom) conducted what it described as self-defense strikes on Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz. According to Centcom, these actions responded to attempted Iranian attacks across the Middle East.

U.S. forces also intercepted or witnessed the failure of multiple Iranian projectiles, including:

  • Three attack drones directed at civilian maritime vessels in regional waters.

  • Two missiles fired toward Kuwait.

  • Three missiles fired toward Bahrain.

The escalation follows a U.S. naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz initiated on April 13. As part of this operation, a U.S. aircraft disabled the aforementioned oil tanker by striking its engine room with a Hellfire missile after the vessel's crew reportedly disregarded multiple warnings. Tehran responded by holding the leadership of Kuwait and Bahrain responsible for the security disruptions due to the presence of U.S. bases within their borders.

Diplomatic Fallout and Stalled Peace Negotiations

The Indian foreign ministry issued a statement condemning the attack that killed one of its citizens and injured several others, calling on all involved parties to halt further hostilities.

This military escalation significantly threatens a fragile ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran. Negotiations to finalize a permanent peace deal collapsed over the weekend due to disputes regarding the terms of the framework.

Key Points of Contention:

Strait of Hormuz Regulations: The U.S. has sought modifications regarding maritime access and security.

Nuclear Material: The U.S. framework demands the removal of highly enriched uranium from Iran.

Sanctions Relief: U.S. officials maintain that any relief from economic sanctions remains strictly conditional on Iran addressing its nuclear program, rather than merely reopening shipping lanes.

While U.S. administrative leadership has expressed optimism regarding the potential for a final agreement and a high-level meeting with Iranian leadership, the Iranian foreign ministry has publicly disputed the current negotiation terms, accusing Washington of presenting contradictory demands.
