Russia launched a coordinated, large-scale overnight aerial assault on multiple Ukrainian cities early Tuesday, killing at least ten people and injuring dozens more. The strikes, which involved ballistic missiles and drones, hit residential areas and critical infrastructure, triggering widespread power outages and trapping civilians under rubble.

Heavy Casualties Reported in Dnipro and Kyiv

The regional capital of Dnipro suffered severe casualties, with local officials reporting six people killed and 36 others injured.

In Kyiv, the capital city, at least four people were killed and 51 injured. Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that 35 of the wounded required hospitalization. Klitschko stated that two high-rise apartment buildings sustained direct hits, sparking fears that residents remain trapped beneath the debris. Emergency crews are currently deployed at the scenes.

The strikes in Kyiv caused fires near a gas station, a construction site, several apartment blocks, and two private homes. Large plumes of smoke were visible over the city center, and emergency power shutdowns have been implemented across the capital.

Air raid alerts were activated nationwide as Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s City Military Administration, confirmed that Russian forces were utilizing ballistic weaponry.

Retaliatory Intent and Escalation

The bombardment follows warnings issued by Moscow last week. The Russian Ministry of Defense had threatened "systematic strikes" on Ukrainian decision-making and military centers, citing a May 21–22 Ukrainian drone strike on a facility in Russian-held Starobilsk, located in the Luhansk region. Moscow claimed that attack targeted a dormitory and killed 21 people.

The General Staff of Ukraine's Armed Forces acknowledged conducting the Starobilsk operation but maintained that the target was a valid Russian military unit. Kyiv subsequently dismissed Russia's threats as "shameless blackmail" and called for increased international pressure on Moscow.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had anticipated the escalation, warning citizens in his Monday evening address to strictly adhere to air raid protocols. "Intelligence warnings regarding Russian strikes remain in effect. A massive strike is possible; they have prepared one," Zelensky said.

Infrastructure Targeted Nationwide

Beyond the capital and Dnipro, Russian strikes targeted an industrial facility in the southern city of Zaporizhzhia.

Concurrently, authorities in Russia's southern Krasnodar Krai region reported a drone attack on the Ilsky Oil Refinery, which resulted in a localized fire. The regional emergency response center reported no casualties from that incident.

The current wave of hostilities follows the expiration of a brief ceasefire in May. Since then, Russia has intensified its aerial campaign against urban centers, including a previous strike on a residential block that killed 24 people, including three children. Kyiv has also launched cross-border drone operations, including a recent strike in the Moscow region that killed three people an action President Zelensky defended as a justified response to ongoing Russian aggression.
