Gunmen Disguised in Uniforms Kill 10 in Plateau State Community Raid

JOS, NIGERIA — At least 10 people have been confirmed dead and several others injured following a violent siege on the Angwan Rukuba community in the Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State on Sunday night.

The Attack

The assault reportedly began around 8:00 PM in Gari Yawaye, a suburb populated by residents and students of the University of Jos. According to eyewitness accounts, a group of more than 20 gunmen arrived on motorcycles and began firing sporadically, causing widespread panic as residents fled for safety.

Witnesses noted a disturbing detail: the attackers were allegedly dressed in uniforms belonging to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

“The attackers were dressed in NDLEA uniforms," one resident told reporters. "They even purchased items from a trader before opening fire from within the shop. While the shop owner escaped, four others nearby were killed.”

Casualties and Response

By the time the gunmen retreated, 10 individuals were dead. Numerous others sustained injuries, some from direct gunfire and others from stray bullets or accidents occurring during the chaotic escape.

Community members expressed frustration regarding the security response, claiming that military and police personnel arrived approximately one hour after the attackers had already fled the scene.

As of Monday morning, official confirmation and further details remain scarce. Attempts to reach the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Alfred Alabo, and the spokesperson for Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP), Captain Nicholas Oteh, were unsuccessful as calls to their offices went unanswered.

The motive for the attack remains unknown, and no group has yet claimed responsibility.
